How to improve the kitchen on a small budget
Get the backsplash nicer
Tiled backsplash can get ugly grouts after a few years. Nowadays you can buy a grout filler pen to paint over the miscolored grout. Just make sure to clean it properly before getting started.
Ugly standard size squared tiles of a color or pattern you dislike can be covered in adhesive plastics, from brands like D C Fix.
Tidy up the counter top
If you already have a good enough counter top you can just focus on placing usable items in a nicer way and clean the space from clutter every day.
If the counter top is of wood and is getting ugly, sand it down a bit and put new varnish or paint on. This work needs only a few days in total.

Change the color of the cabinet doors
If you’re not pleased with the looks of the cabinet doors, they can be transformed. The most popular choice for many when changing the doors is painting them. This is not too tricky. Depending on what material, you’ll need different kind of paint. Ask the local paint store for assistance.
If the kitchen cabinets are from IKEA, of model ”Metod”, you can easily switch the doors for a new model and style of your choosing. That way the new cabinet doors will last very long. We’ve worked with only IKEA kitchens, and have good experiences from the cabinet door models Veddinge, Bodbyn and Voxtorp. The later needs no handles which is both a cost and labour saver.

Add a kitchen island combined with seating
If you have the room and/or want to combine a storage and work space with a necessity like a dining space, this can do the trick. Measure and buy kitchen cabinets and a counter top from IKEA of likewise, wide enough to seat two or three chairs on one side, and another chair on the shorter ends. Make sure to fit cabinets and leg space from when sitting on the chairs under the counter top.
This was made in an apartment renovation in Sandviken, since there was not enough space for a spacious kitchen, dining area and TV area. The cabinets had a perfect depth to give space for when seated. We placed a full size counter top matching the kitchen side.
